Young widow and lonely heiress Jorantha Lombard Rutledge confronts the horrifying possibility of being put out of her own Georgia plantation house, especially when greedy in-laws swoop in like hungry vultures, determined to strip her of every possession. But as the days pass and her attraction to the man builds into one of sexual desire, so does his memories slowly return—memories Jorantha shared only with her beloved Nevin. With a combination of terror and hope, Jorie realizes that perhaps the stranger is not such a stranger after all, but a man miraculously sent to protect her at all costs.

But until the truth is revealed, Jorie opens her heart and surrenders to forbidden desires, giving herself to the stranger known only as "Him."
